Environmentally Friendly Risograph Printing: Next Chapter Studio
Founded in New York City in 2018, and moved to Albuquerque, NM in 2020, Next Chapter Studio designs, prints, and assembles all of our products by hand.
Who are the founders of Next Chapter Studio? Where are you based out of?
Next Chapter Studio was founded by Lauren Harms and Brian Gilbreath in 2018, and we are based out of Albuquerque, NM right off of Route 66!
When and how did you get into Risograph printing?
Lauren took a Riso class at SVA in 2017. She was instantly hooked and couldn't wait to keep printing, one thing lead to another and she started producing greeting cards. The SVA RisoLab is an amazing space that gives incredible access to students and the community through continuing education courses. In 2019 we made the jump and got our own Riso EZ-590.
What is your design process?
We are always on the look out for fresh ideas. Our main inspiration is Riso printing itself and the incredible colors. We love experimenting with the inks and printers – it's always a surprise to see an idea go from our heads, to the computer screen, to being printed on paper. It gets better each step of the process.
Where do you see Next Chapter Studio in the future? Are there any cool plans or projects in the works?
We moved into an awesome studio space in Albuquerque's Nob Hill at the beginning of 2022. We've been working hard to build it out to make it both a functional space for shipping our cards and prints, and a Riso workshop space. We're excited to see where the studio space takes us.
Next Chapter Studio greeting cards are helping keep the art of writing alive. What has been the most memorable message someone's written to you?
The thing we hear most often is people admiring the bright colors of Riso. They can instantly tell that it's something different and unique. We love getting to tell them about what makes Riso special, and keeping the magic of print alive!
